Jesus told yet another two parables in Matthew 13v47-52 concerning the “kingdom of heaven” which is best understood as the reign of God.
In the first, a net is let down and catches many fish. While the net is in the water, it is impossible to separate the good from the bad, but when it is full, the fishermen pull it up on the shore and sort the good fish into baskets and the bad fish to rubbish.
In the second, the owner of a house brings out both old and new treasures for others to see.
Jesus explains the meanings:
– In the first, while presently all people are together in the world, at the end of the age, the angels will separate the wicked from the righteous and the wicked will go to the fiery furnace.
– In the second, the disciples have now been given training by Jesus which they have understood. They are to share this understanding with others.
From this are two simple challenges for us today:
– Do I have the assurance of salvation in Jesus Christ? Only his righteousness is sufficient, and there is coming a day when it will be too late to change course.
– God has revealed to our hearts and minds much truth and grace through Jesus, the Holy Spirit and God’s Word. Am I displaying this to the people around me that they too may be saved?
May we both know the truth and display it to the world, and our friends, neighbours and work colleagues be made righteous in Christ.
With much blessing,
Roland
