Allowing the Spirit to flow!

Last Sunday we were looking at how the Holy Spirit enables us in our daily lives. He does this in terms of:

–          Assuring us we are children of God which in turn gives us faith and confidence.

–          Transforming our characters so that we are more like Christ and displaying his fruit.

–          Empowering us with gifts for the good of the church.

–          Enabling us as witnesses for Jesus.

–          Guiding us in what is true and to where he wants to use us.

This coming Sunday we are returning to Ephesians having covered the first half in the autumn. In the middle of the passage we are looking at is, “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption” (Ephesians 4v30). Note the kickback to the start of the letter: in chapter 1, Paul is in a huge praise to God with wonders spilling out of his mouth (he was probably dictating) as he considers the wonder of the salvation that is ours in Christ Jesus and he draws it to a close with, “Having believed you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption…” (1v13). My knowledge and assurance of the fantastic truths that are ours in Christ are made known and assured to me by the Holy Spirit. So, why would I grieve him, by going against his grain in my new life? That would be to spite the hand that feeds!

May we truly appreciate the Holy Spirit and remove the things in our lives as individuals and our life as a church that grieve Him and block His flow,

With love and blessing,
