14th January – Staying Up – Ephesians 6v13

Dear Hope family,

Thought for the Week

Staying Up

Ephesians 6v13  “… and after you have done everything, to stand.”

So this coming Monday is what is sometimes called “Blue Monday” – the day is described as the most depressing of the year due to the combination of various seasonal pressures including the weather and post-Christmas blues.

Don’t let it bite you: God gives us a strategy to overcome such things:

  • Take every thought captive – to make it obedient to Christ (2 Corinthians 10v5). We have a responsibility to control our thinking so that each thought we have is in line with Christ.
  • Focus on Jesus and what he has done for you (Hebrews 12v1-3). That control of our thinking is best done by focusing our attention on Jesus: consider the suffering he went through for you so that you could be a forgiven child of God; consider how he has filled with his Spirit and has prepared heaven for you. You can lead your thinking in this way through whatever means suit you. Keep focusing on Him until a spirit of thankfulness rises up in you.
  • Approach God with your difficulties, but also with thankfulness (Philippians 4v4-7). So now, with that spirit of thankfulness also in you, you are able to present all your requests to Him. The result is that his peace will guard your heart and mind.

May it be for you a day of the joy of the Lord,

With love and blessing,

Roland

7th January – Down is Easier than Up – Philippians 3v12-14

Dear Hope family,

Thought for the Week

Down is Easier than Up

Philippians 3v12,14  “I press on … I press on … heavenwards”

To go down is to submit to the pull of gravity, and requires little effort. When I am out cycling, going uphill requires effort and takes time; by contrast, coming down enables freewheeling and is all over so quickly.

I am minded as we see some of the events in the US of how fragile the privileges and the blessings we have in this world are. Let us take care to protect what we have and move upwards rather than downwards. Moving upwards together often requires us to disadvantage ourselves and our views. As we enter another lockdown, we also find the removal of our normal freedoms, and we disadvantage ourselves for the sake of the whole.

What is 2021 going to mean for you? What are your ambitions for the year? How spiritually ambitious are you? Are you going to drift downwards this year or move on upwards? Up will take effort, and sometimes be a hard slog. In the Bible, the glory of God’s presence is often encountered on the mountain (think Moses on Sinai, Elijah on Carmel, Jesus being transfigured). It takes effort to get up a mountain, but the reward vastly outweighs the effort.

In John Bunyan’s “Pilgrim’s Progress”, one of the handicaps poor Christian has is the baggage he takes with him. What baggage is holding you back on your spiritual journey? What is it that you need to cast off?

Many things may get in the way of goals you set for 2021, but your relationship with God is down to you – it is not up to other people, and God is always open and faithful.

May 2021 be a year of adventure in the Lord for you as you discover more of the wonders of his love and purpose for you. Press on!!

With love and blessing,

Roland

Dear Hope family,

May you know the love of the Lord for you this Christmas.

With love and blessing for this Christmas and New Year,

17th December – God’s Plan to bring you Joy – Acts 2v28

Dear Hope family,

Thought for the Week

God’s Plan to bring you Joy

Acts 2v28  “You fill me with joy in your presence.”

The presence of the LORD is a key theme. Peter quotes the above verse from the Old Testament, so let’s consider the blessings of God’s presence from there:

We might not be able to have a big party this year, but “you will fill me with joy in your presence” Psalm 16v11

We might not be able to have many guests to dinner, but you can be “eating and rejoicing in the presence of the LORD your God.” Deuteronomy 27v7

There may be many things to fear this Christmas, but “In the shelter of your presence you hide them … you keep them safe in your dwelling.” Psalm 31v20

There may be many things we lack this Christmas, but “Surely you have granted him unending blessings and made him glad with the joy of your presence.” Psalm 21v6

The direction ahead may be unclear, but “Blessed are those .. who walk in the light of your presence, LORD.” Psalm 89v15

In that light the command in Deuteronomy 15v20 “Each year you and your family are to eat them in the presence of the LORD” is not a burdensome command at all. And I think is New Testament people can do it more often!!

The heart of Christmas is the presence of the LORD – Immanuel. As many of us enjoy a quieter Christmas let’s take the opportunity to dwell in His presence.

May you know the presence of the Lord, and so know his love, joy and peace this Christmas time.

With love and blessing,

Roland

10th December – God’s Plan to become Man – Philippians2v6-7

Dear Hope family,

Thought for the Week

God’s Plan to become Man

Philippians 2v6-7  “Being in very nature God .. made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.”

When did you start preparing for Christmas? I was fascinated earlier today to read that Filipinos start  their 4.5 months of Christmas celebrations at the start of September.

God starting preparing for Christmas from the start of creation as we saw last week. After several millennia of hints, the prophet Isaiah wrote about 600BC, “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel” (Immanuel means “God with us”) (Isaiah 7v11). This is of course fulfilled as the angel says to Mary, “You will be with child and give birth to a son … he will be called Son of the Most High … The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God… For nothing is impossible with God” (Luke 1v31-38).

Sit and ponder. God decided to become man. As the Psalmist writes, “What is man that you are mindful of him?” (Psalm 8v4). God was not just mindful of us, he became one of us – like you and I. This is a season to celebrate!

With love and blessing,

Roland

3rd December – God’s Plan from the beginning – 1 Peter 1v20

Dear Hope family,

Thought for the Week

God’s Plan from the beginning

1 Peter 1v20 “He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.”

Have you ever prepared or been part of a surprise party? There is a big plan afoot, but the central recipient is unaware of it. Maybe some little clues are dropped as part of the fun, but they only maintain the intrigue rather than reveal the plan.

It is a bit like that with Jesus. God chose him right from the start – and even before the start. We so often focus on ourselves and our salvation, but this salvation is much, much bigger than you or I – it is a plan that stretches right back through time, and it is a plan which stretches right across all space. God dropped little clues in the prophets, but what they meant could only be fully seen when the real thing came into view.

While the plan maybe cosmic, the reason for revelation is for you and I – so that we can participate in it. The context of the above verse is Christ being the perfect sacrificial lamb to “redeem you from the empty way of life handed down to you”.

It helps to see our present situation in the light of the big picture. God is unfolding his amazing plan. I don’t know the detail, but he has told us the destinations and he has told us how to get there. By his grace in Christ, we are indeed redeemed from the hell-road to the heaven-road.

We may remember the birth of many great men, but the birth of Jesus calls for huge celebration, because in his life, we too have life.

With love and blessing,

Roland

26th October – Constant in Change – Psalm 13v5

Dear Hope family,

Thought for the Week

Constant in Change

Psalm 13v5 ” But I trust in your unfailing love”

As we face changing rules and regulations once again, and as maybe there are frustrations and concerns for many about Christmas, let’s focus on the words of this Psalm to bring our thoughts to God:

1 How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
2 How long must I wrestle with my thoughts
and day after day have sorrow in my heart?
How long will my enemy triumph over me?

3 Look on me and answer, Lord my God.
Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death,
4 and my enemy will say, “I have overcome him,”
and my foes will rejoice when I fall.

5 But I trust in your unfailing love;
my heart rejoices in your salvation.
6 I will sing the Lord’s praise,
for he has been good to me.

And then let’s reflect on the words of the song by Jesus Culture:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_KXsMCJgBQ

Higher than the mountains that I face
Stronger than the power of the grave
Constant through the trial and the change
One thing remains
This one thing remains

Your love never fails, never gives up never runs out on me

Because on and on and on and on it goes
It overwhelms and satisfies my soul
And I never ever have to be afraid
One thing remains
This one thing remains

Your love never fails, never gives up never runs out on me

In death in life
I’m confident and covered by the power of your great love
My debt is paid
There’s nothing that can separate my heart from your great love

Your love never fails, never gives up never runs out on me

May the Lord fill your heart and mind with a confidence in Him who loves you and is working for your good.

With love and blessing,

Roland

19th November – Uncovering the Problem! – Psalm 139v24

Dear Hope family,

Thought for the Week

Uncovering the problem!

Psalm 139v24 “See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

Builders have been working on the community centre we use for almost the whole of 2020. Sometimes we have found walls which could not be built on and we just had to take them down and start again. But there have also been points where decisions have had to be made as to whether we strip back and start again, or whether we just cover the old with new.

One such occasion occurred last week. We were going to use a suspended ceiling covering the existing one, but for various reasons we decided to take down the existing one and replace it. The hard news was that in taking the old down and revealing the joists, we found dry rot at one end, woodworm in the middle and a cracked beam at the other end. This news was hard, but it was far better to have uncovered it now than later have some misfortune.

The cracked oak beam had been supporting an outside wall for more than 150 years. At some point in its history, someone had screwed a steel plate over the crack to try and hold it together. However the crack had continued to grow and now extended beyond the plate. No option now, but to take it out and replace it.

We have all lived life, and so hidden beneath our façade are damaged and corroded parts that are better dealt with than covered up. Unchecked, these may be the point of failure in the time of crisis.

David’s prayer in this psalm is a brave one. He has described earlier in the Psalm how well God knows him (eg v1-4) – every detail is seen (v11-12). To be opened up for surgery is never comfortable, but the end result is life. David appreciates this. He understands that as God opens him up spiritually and deals with the areas of weakness in his life, God is actually preparing and leading him in the way that will last forever.

Are you struggling with life at the moment? Is God opening up areas of our lives that need more of his healing touch? Are we ready to pray the prayer of David?

“In all things God works for the good of those who love him.” Romans 8v28

With love and blessing,

Roland

12th November – Accepting Defeat! – Philippians 4v11

Dear Hope family,

Thought for the Week

Accepting Defeat!

Philippians 4v11 “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.”

Frank Sinatra sang “I did it my way”, but the reality is that not everything goes our way. How do we react when things do not go our way? We may mock Donald Trump for being unwilling to accept defeat, but what about ourselves – how do we react when we meet defeat, when we lose what we once had against our wishes? It hurts – and we respond out of that hurt.

Real life includes defeats and adverse circumstances. Our reaction is a question of where we are putting our hope and dreams; a question of where we find our identity and how we define ourselves; a question of what we consider most important in our lives. If these are wrapped up in the power, influence, security, status, comfort or other benefits of what I currently have, then I am going to struggle with losing it.

Real victory is to admit defeat or loss and move on. It takes strength of character, a resolve, an admission of our own weakness, a determination to try differently. Your character is of greater value than your achievements.

Real followers of Jesus put their hope in God their heavenly Father. They rest in the assurance that he has everything in his hands. They bend the knee before him as the one who is greater and submit to his ways. They do it “God’s way.”

May God so set your heart on fire for Him that it is His honour that you seek in every situation and you remain content in Him.

With love and blessing,

Roland

5th November – Productive Christians! – 2 Peter 1v5-8

Dear Hope family,

Thought for the Week

2 Peter – Productive Christians!

2 Peter 1v5-8 “faith .. goodness .. knowledge .. self-control .. perseverance … godliness .. brotherly kindness … love. If your possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive”

In business, productivity and effectiveness are important. God wants us to be productive as Christians too. Such productivity is based on the character qualities listed above. As we head into lockdown again today, these qualities are going to be more vital than ever. It is going to take all the perseverance and self-control we can muster!

For Peter, these qualities begin with faith – a simple trust in Jesus – and progress from there through to the ultimate quality of love. In what way do you need to trust God right now?

A list of such qualities may make us feel like failures. Remember the previous verses from the last couple of weeks: “His divine power has given us everything we need to life and godliness”. You are not pursuing these qualities on your own. It is God developing them in you. What qualities might God be going to develop in you during this time? What does it require of you to allow him to do it?

With love and blessing,

Roland
