Jesus told another two parables in Matthew 13v44-45 concerning the “kingdom of heaven” which is best understood as the reign of God.

In the first, when a man finds treasure hidden in a field, he hides it again and goes with joy to sell all he has to buy that field. The second is like it, when a pearl-merchant finds a pearl of great value, he sells all he has to buy that one pearl.

The meanings are the same:

–          both the man in the field and the pearl merchant were looking for something of great worth. What are we seeking? Are we looking for worth and value in life?

–          In both cases, when they find the item of value, they sell everything to obtain that one thing. What areas of our lives are we holding back on?

The simple fact is that entering the kingdom of God means submitting to his reign. This is of huge worth because God is a good king, a wise and gentle ruler, a faithful and honourable Lord and he has your interests at heart. To be in His presence is sweet, to do His will is food to the soul. What is God calling us to get rid of so that we can even more embrace his reign? Do I so appreciate the value of what he offers that I am prepared to sacrifice all else?

May the eyes of our hearts be enlightened to the huge treasure that is ours in Christ Jesus, and so be ready to follow only Him.

With much blessing,

Roland
