Dear Hope family,
Thought for the Week
Jesus – The Servant King!
“‘Do you understand what I have done for you?’ Jesus asked them.”– John 13v12
On the night Jesus before he was crucified, Jesus met with his disciples for the Jewish Passover meal. During the meal, Jesus got up, wrapped a towel around his waist, poured water into a basin, and washed and dried his disciples’ feet. This was the job of a servant.
His disciples, in the absence of an official servant, had preferred to just get on with the meal with dirty feet rather than stoop low and serve the others. Jesus was different. He had no airs or pretences about him. The passage explains, “Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power.”
We find in Jesus the secret to godly servanthood. Some make themselves servants in order to try and gain power. This is not Jesus. Jesus is able to be a servant because he knows he already has all power in heaven and on earth – and needs to gain nothing for himself.
Similarly for us: the more we realise that we already have everything in Jesus, the more we are able to serve others. Let’s press into God’s love today and then go out and serve one another.
Here is another element of the truth – even now, Jesus is serving you and I. He washes us clean of sin. He heals our hearts. He walks alongside us. He is praying to the Father for us.
With love and blessing,
Roland
